Canardlys

History

The Canardlys were formed in 1994.

The team was established when a few fellas from the 3rd grade team, decided they had reached their "use by date" and wanted to play social rugby.
It was decided one night, sitting around a bar leaner (or was it in the car park), that the team would form. A social team needs a name and after much deliberation (and beer) the name Canardly ("Can Hardly") was agreed upon.
Being a social team means you must have fun, enjoy your game (won or lost) and enjoy a quiet ale afterward. The Canardlys have kept their side of the bargain.

Results have varied throughout the seasons. The Canardlys are always up there somewhere at the end of each season. Best chance at winning the competition was in 1998. The Canardlys were on fire that year, only to stumble in the final (12 - 10). Our international fixtures though, are another story. An untarnished record. No losses for the Canardlys against touring teams from Japan and USA .

The Canardlys have never been short of players (well... at the beginning of the season). Most guys that joined the team are still around as well - either through playing, supporting or coaching.

Originals from day one include:
Grunta: Our beloved team patron after retiring from the game. Is believed to be the person responsible for the Canardly name.
Lane O: Player, coach and now player again. Can't keep him away not even with broken fingers!
Ray: The original coach and likes to show the boys he's still got it with the odd game.
Levy: Longest serving Canardly. According to Levy he has been playing for the Canardlys for 16 years! That 6 more than they have been around! Levy is also our patron but he can argue that with Grunta.
Shacks: The guy that uses more strapping tape than a mummy. Shacks usually starts getting ready 2 days before the game but a summer accident will keep Shacks on the sideline this season!
